In celebration of National Dental Hygiene Month, Pennsylvania is encouraging everyone to improve their dental care. Vote for your favorite dental hygienist and you both could win a $50 Visa gift card!
That’s right, simply schedule a dental appointment during the month of October and vote for your favorite dental hygienist.
National Dental Hygiene Month is sponsored by the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) and the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company to convey their commitment to improving America’s dental health. The theme of the month is “Brush. Floss. Rinse. Chew.” This message is being expressed though a national radio media tour that highlights the importance of good dental hygiene, along with opportunities to earn community service grants of $2,500 and $5,000 for projects promoting dental health in the community. These grants are a generous gift from the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company Foundation, in partnership with the ADHA Institute for Oral Health (IOH). Applications must be received by November 1, 2013.
National Dental Hygiene Month is the highlight of the ADHA’s yearlong centennial celebration of the founding of dental hygiene in 1913. The month's main message of “Brush. Floss. Rinse. Chew.” spotlights the four simple steps to better dental hygiene, then offers helpful hints for adding them into your dental care routine.
The first step is brushing for two minutes, twice a day to reduce plaque, fight gingivitis, and prevent other plaque-related problems. The second step is daily flossing to remove the plaque and food particles that get trapped between teeth, which your toothbrush can’t reach. The third step is rinsing with an antimicrobial mouthwash each day to help reduce plaque and prevent gingivitis. The final thing you must do is chew. Research shows that chewing sugar-free gum after eating is clinically proven to improve dental health by producing the saliva that helps fight cavities, neutralize plaque acids, and strength tooth enamel.
