6 Dental Care Tips for a Better, Brighter Smile

No matter how well you think you take care of your teeth, you can always do more to better your smile. Discover some dental care secrets to make your smile its very best.

Visit the Dentist Regularly: Around 50% of U.S. adults do not go to the dentist due to finances, fears, or forgetfulness. But the American Dental Association advises seeing an affordable dentist twice a year to detect major dental problems, such as tooth decay, gum disease, or oral cancer. Treating problems early is much more affordable and much less painful that catching them at a later stage. That’s why you need to find the best dentist for you and make sure to make your appointments.

Buy the Best Brush: Choose a toothbrush with soft bristles to ensure that you don’t damage your tooth enamel and cause gums to recede. Replace it every two to three months because brushes become worn over time, which reduces their cleaning ability.

Brush Better: Too many people either don’t brush enough or brush incorrectly, which makes their dental care efforts much less effective. The best dentist will recommend brushing your teeth at least twice a day. Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle, directed toward the gum line, and brush gently in circular motions. Brush for approximately two minutes, but be gentle to avoid doing any dental damage.

Fix Your Flossing: Flossing is a dental care must because it keeps teeth and gums healthy. But many people fail to floss properly. Wind 18 inches of floss around your index fingers, holding about two inches between your fingers to use. Hold the floss closely against the tooth, gliding it over both sides of the tooth to remove any food particles and plaque. Then, unroll a fresh section of floss and repeat for each tooth.

Stop Sipping Soda: Carbonated sodas are filled with acids that erode the enamel on teeth. Also, these acids make tooth enamel softer and less resistant to tooth decay. While an occasional can is all right, too many sodas will cause too many problems and lead to too many visits to an affordable dentist. Try reducing your intake and switching to water, adding flavor with fruit or mint leaves.

Scale Down the Sweets: Sugar is a leading cause of tooth decay. It feeds bacteria and acidity in your mouth, which causes plaque to build up and erode your tooth enamel and gums. That’s why you need to reduce your intake of sugary foods and drinks. If you do indulge, try to brush and floss soon afterward.
