Why Should I See a Teeth Bleaching Dentist for Professional Teeth Whitening?
A dentist with expertise in teeth whitening can offer results that far exceed what you would get if you used a toothpaste or whitening strips. Plus, you benefit by having a dental exam beforehand so your dentist can check for decay, gum disease or damaged teeth, which you might not know about. Any untreated conditions could cause pain during whitening if not addressed first. Additionally, you’ll see same-day results from your whitening treatment.
When your dentist examines your teeth and gums, he or she will assess the staining to ensure that your teeth will respond to a teeth whitening treatment. Whitening works best on tobacco stains and stains from coffee, tea and red wine. Stains deep inside your teeth from a faulty filling, trauma, tetracycline staining or too much fluoride won’t respond to a teeth bleaching treatment. In addition, restorations, such as veneers and crowns, don’t change color with a whitening treatment. Our dentist can explain what results to expect if you have restorations.
If you would like to see your teeth get up to eight shades lighter in an afternoon, contact us today to request a teeth whitening appointment.
Can I Get a Dentist-Dispensed Teeth Whitening Kit?
Our dentist can supply you with a kit for teeth whitening at home. You’ll come in for an appointment and have an exam so our dentist can check for any underlying dental health problems. If your oral health is good, we will take an impression of your teeth so a dental lab can create custom whitening trays for you. You’ll return to pick up your trays and custom whitening solution. Typically, you will wear the trays for an hour a day. In about two weeks, you’ll have significantly whiter teeth. Call our office to set up an appointment if you’re interested in at-home teeth whitening.
What Is the Cost for Teeth Whitening at a Dentist’s Office?
We would need you to come in for a consultation so our dentist can provide an accurate estimate of your teeth bleaching cost. Your cost will be based on whether you have restorations that would need to be color matched, the type of teeth whitening system our dentist uses and if you also will need a take-home whitening kit.
Do OTC Teeth Whitening Products Work as Well as Chairside Whitening?
With continuous use, over-the-counter products you can buy in any drugstore will lighten your teeth slightly. They are much weaker, since only a dental professional can administer a concentrated bleaching solution, so you’ll never get the pronounced results that a teeth bleaching dentist can achieve. It’s also difficult to get uniform results with OTC teeth whiteners. If you use whitening strips and your teeth are even slightly uneven, you’ll notice that only certain areas of your teeth are a shade or two lighter. You also risk irritating your gums with OTC products if you use them incorrectly. If you want the best results, call our office for an appointment.
What Happens During a Teeth Bleaching Treatment?
You can expect your whitening treatment to last for up to an hour and a half. The steps vary according to the teeth whitening system your dentist uses, but you should expect:
- An exam to be performed so our dentist can explain your expected result , after which you’ll have a professional teeth cleaning. The cleaning helps to ensure consistent results.
- Pictures to be taken of your teeth to evaluate your progress at the end of your teeth whitening treatment.
- A cheek retractor to be placed in your mouth to expose your teeth and help you keep the inside of your cheeks away from the bleaching agent.
- Your gums to be shielded with a gel to protect them.
- A coating of the bleaching agent to be applied, removed after a set time and then reapplied as needed. A special light may be used to enhance the results.
- The results to be evaluated and a follow-up visit or take-home whitening kit may be recommended.
Your teeth should remain white for up to several years if you practice good oral hygiene and use a straw to drink beverages that could stain your teeth. If you smoke, quitting will help keep your teeth looking bright.
