Is It Time to Extract Your Wisdom Teeth?
Your wisdom teeth, which your dentist may also call your third molars, are the four teeth located in the very back corners of your mouth. You may not see them until you are a young adult between 17 and 21 years of age. They are the last teeth to come in, and sometimes they can cause problems. If there’s not enough room in your mouth, your wisdom teeth can’t erupt normally. They may grow in sideways or they may not be able to erupt through your gum tissues at all. If they become trapped inside your jaw, they are called impacted wisdom teeth. Impacted teeth aren’t healthy, so your wisdom teeth dentist may decide it’s best to remove them.
When Are Wisdom Tooth Extractions Required?
Each case is different, but your wisdom teeth may need to be removed if they are causing any of the following problems:
- Tooth or jaw pain
- Fluid-filled cysts
- Solid tumors
- Gum disease
- Tooth decay
- Damage to neighboring teeth
Let an Affordable Dentist Decide
Your dentist or oral surgeon may also suggest wisdom tooth extractions even if they are not yet causing any problems. This is to prevent problems later in life when tooth extractions would be more complicated and your nerves would not heal as easily. Removal can also be part of a restoration process or orthodontic treatment plan.
Your mouth changes through the years, so if you keep your wisdom teeth, you’ll need to be sure your dentist monitors them for potential problems. As you get older, your risk of developing issues with your wisdom teeth increases. Be sure to see your dentist regularly to maintain good oral health.
